If your idea of a spa break is to go to the quietest spot you can think of, look no further than the Hotel Kalevala - a delightful little hotel in the remote east of Finland, close to the Russian border and surrounded by acres of forest and shimmering lakes.

This 38 room hotel is situated right on the shores of Lake Lammasjarvi near Kuhmo , each room having its own WC, shower, telephone, TV and minibar - for that special occasion why not upgrade to one of their intimate suites which have a separate living room and a whirlpool bath.
The cosy restaurant overlooks the lake and has a good choice of menus after which you can relax in the lounge next door with its roaring log fire.

The small wellbeing department in the hotel offers 2 Finnish saunas, a peat sauna, infrared sauna, herb bubble bath, massage beds, a 7 person Jacuzzi and for the most hardy, you can enjoy a dip in the clearwater of Lake Lammasjarvi after your sauna.

Summer or winter, the hotel offers a choice of activities including tennis, badminton , beach volleyball, go on hiking trails plus the hotel has its own rollerski track next door - like similar Finnish properties, winter time is probably the best with plenty of skiing and ice fishing, not to mention the husky rides and reindeer trails

Nearby to the hotel is the village of Kuhmo which has a very interesting arts centre and you also have the opportunity to go on a Bear Watching excursion, an all night adventure under close supervision to be up close to the wild life of this particular area.
